American Greetings - 1988 to 1990
Manager, Resource Planning
This group's accomplishments included:
- A LAN-based capacity and performance information system that downloads
data from the mainframe and presents it in graphical form on PCs.
- Complex performance modeling projects of both application systems and the
IBM MVS operating system.
- Analysis of hardware acquisitions from technical, business, and financial
aspects. Written and oral presentations to management on the results of our
studies.
- Maintenance and testing of the Disaster Recover Plan for the
corporation's information systems.
Control Data Corporation (now Ceridian Corporation)
Business Information Systems Division - 1976 to 1987
Manager, PC Systems Development 1985 - 1987
Responsibilities included a number of development projects using C and
dBase. Systems included a PC-based data entry package that updates mainframe
databases, and several EDI input, translation, transmission, printing, and
formatting applications.
In my largest effort I lead the development of a PC-based electronic mail
system. This system, written in C, used a client/server design between the
System/370 server and the PC. Originally intended for use within Control
Data, the package was so well received that Control Data marketed it under
the name REDIMAIL, and thousands of copies are in use in the US and
overseas.
Established the PC development environment for the division. Selected
development software, and set up development procedures including source
control, testing and release procedures, and quality assurance guidelines.
Manager, IBM MVS Applications Development 1984 - 1985
Responsible for a variety of development projects for basic
business systems running on MVS, including accounting for customer activity
on time sharing systems, commission systems, and customer history.
Manager, Systems Performance and Capacity Planning 1982 - 1983
This group performed capacity and long range planning and performance
tuning for a ten mainframe shop with three operating systems.
Managed the performance aspects of a new product offering using an IBM
4361 installed on the customer's site. Created the procedures for specifying
these systems and monitoring them after installation. Worked closely with
marketing and with customers in pre- and post-sales support.
IBM MVS System Capacity Planner 1980 - 1982
Planned, conducted, and documented studies in capacity planning, system
tuning, hardware and software benchmarks, DASD management, and response and
throughput. Designed and implemented an MVS performance database in SAS.
Designed and wrote a real-time MVS system monitor in System/370 assembler. Developed and taught in-house courses in PL/I, System/370 assembler, and SAS.
Programmer/Analyst 1976 - 1979
Performed analysis and programming on the systems that tracked and billed
customer activity on Control Data time sharing systems.
