Object-Oriented Best Practices
The Requirements
A major corporation with an Information Services staff of over 250
hired us to create a
Foundation of best practices for internally developed
applications. These best practices were for use on applications needing to integrate components ranging
from new browser-based applications to legacy COBOL applications on an IBM
mainframe.
The Solution
MindCrafted Systems worked with
this client’s systems staff to define a
series of standard objects and components for use in all applications from the
desktop to the mainframe. These objects included objects to define a user,
message, error, etc. We participated in pilot development project using
these objects. We also wrote extensive web-based programmer documentation. Today these practices are in everyday use
throughout the organization
Technology, Tools and Innovations
We used the following tools and
technologies to create and document this framework.
-
Rational Rose
for modeling the new objects included as part of the framework. -
Microsoft Visual Basic for the pilot. -
Microsoft Word and Doc-To-Help to create the
online web-based documentation

Communication |
 |
|
Needing to clearly communicate new
standards, we created a web-based help system
clearly documenting their new software development
framework. |
| Paradigm Shifts |
|
Realizing that most of this client's
IS staff was not familiar with object-oriented
programming concepts, we took great care in making few
assumptions in what reads would know while still making
the documentation streamlined for expert users. |
